Message from the Interim Head: Ocean Sciences
Our oceans continue to play a defining role in shaping South Africa’s environmental resilience, economic opportunity, and scientific advancement. As global attention intensifies around sustainability and climate adaptation, it becomes even more important that we deepen our understanding of the ocean systems that support life and livelihoods.
Over the past decade, national efforts to strengthen the ocean economy have expanded significantly. Building on this momentum, Nelson Mandela University remains committed to advancing a transdisciplinary approach to ocean sciences as a strategic differentiator. This spans capabilities in ocean governance and the law of the seas, to innovative marine technologies, ocean cultures and heritage, sustainable coastal livelihoods and marine food security, climate change, shallow water ecosystems, maritime studies, and the development of critical knowledge and skills for the ocean economy.

Our work is strengthened by meaningful partnerships with government, industry, civil society, and coastal communities. These collaborations ensure that our teaching, research, and engagement remain relevant, socially embedded, and aligned with national, continental and global priorities.
We continue to grow academic pathways that prepare graduates to lead with integrity, excellence, innovative and entrepreneurial mindsets, and a deep appreciation for ethical stewardship. In so doing, we are equipping the next generation of ocean scientists and practitioners to shape sustainable ocean futures for the benefit of humanity and the planet.
Together, we will continue to advance knowledge and innovation, protect our rich marine biodiversity, and promote the wellbeing of present and future generations.
